| One of the nicest
things you can do for your pet! Reiki is a simple art of healing that everyone has the ability to learn and incorporate into their lives. Like many other forms of holistic healing (and animal communication), it involves calling upon your higher power which many people refer to as “God”, and using energy to provide healing to animals or humans. The energy is supplied by the Universe and the healer involved is simply the ‘conductor’ of the energy. Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is Japanese and can be translated into “Universal Life Energy.” There is a wide variety of books and websites that describe the history of Reiki as well as giving in-depth information regarding all aspects of Reiki. Reiki is a natural healing form that uses energy (or white light) and brings balance and healing into the animal (or human’s) body. The energy goes to any area in the body that may require it and so can be very specific, as well as providing overall soothing and vitality. Reiki is highly versatile and can by done in person with the animal present but is equally effective done at long distance as well. ![]() I have found that animals respond quickly and positively to the energy healing of Reiki; their spirits are so open to the wonders of the Universe! Within my own family of animals I have seen relief and healing brought to my horse who has leg and digestive problems; he will stand eyes closed and let the white energy light completely bath him. During the last days of my rabbit, Gussie’s, life he would quietly lay beside me and as the Reiki light settled around him his breathing would become less labored. I find it brings grounding and relief to my high strung and sometimes overwrought Siamese cat. I have found Reiki to be as effective when used over a long distance and have used it in conjunction with animal communication consultations to help animals overcome aggression, fear and even pain, and to help give them support when dealing with situations beyond their control. It is important to remember that Reiki cannot be used for diagnosing medical problems or prescribing treatment. Only a trained, licensed practitioner such as a veterinarian can diagnose a medical condition and prescribe treatment for it.However, Reiki can effectively be used in conjunction with prescribed medications or any other holistic remedy as, being based on the healing energies supplied by the Universe, it will not interfere with ongoing treatments. It's also a very nice thing to do for yourself! A prickly Reiki story Gorgeous was an abused hedgehog. He came to be a part of our family when my daughter adopted him from the local pet store trusting I could help him over come his extreme fear of people. The pet store owner, a compassionate animal lover, had taken in the terrified and rejected animal from some young adult males who no longer wanted him. Why? At a party he was taken out of his cage and passed around - the music (I understand) was loud – hedgehogs are very quiet and shy creatures. He was fed beer and who knows what else….and then afterwards when his nature changed he was no longer desired. The store owner hoped to find someone who would give him a loving and understanding home, and that’s where my daughter came into the picture! I decided Gorgeous would be an excellent candidate for Reiki healing. For the first session when I needed to clean his cage he was so prickly I had to use gloves as I couldn’t pick him up with bare
hands. I set him on our island counter top - he snuffled, rolled
into a tight ball, trembled and kept making tiny
‘jumping’ movements (I
think to scare us away). I introduced myself and asked him to let
me help him with Reiki and to only take the amount of Reiki he needed.
I stood back approximately three feet and asked that the Reiki start.
Both my hands trembled as I felt a tremendous amount of energy flowing
to Gorgeous. After about 15 minutes he started to
poke out his
little nose and sniff the air, but with any movement or noise he curled
back into his tight ball and resumed ‘jumping’. He continued to
relax though, and in about half an hour he was walking around the
counter top. After 40 minutes the energy flow between us
diminished so I knew he had taken enough energy for his first session.Session Two: I still needed gloves to remove a prickly Gorgeous from his cage, however, after about 5 minutes he poked his nose out and started exploring – he checked out some of the ‘toys’ I had put out – pushing and chewing on them. He nibbled a bit on a slice of apple. Again there was a lot of energy transferred in the beginning of the session. About 30 minutes into the session Gorgeous turned to look at me, curled up into a loose ball and fell into a deep sleep (a good sign) and about 45 minutes later the energy flow diminished. Session Three: similar to the above session except the beginning energy level was the highest of the three sessions; after about 30 minutes the energy level diminished. During most of the session Gorgeous was alert and curious. At the end of the session he let me pick him up – no gloves – and he settled easily into the palms of my bare hands! Because of the abuse he has suffered I will continue to give Gorgeous regular Reiki treatments. |
