Windows NT - Dial Up Networking

If this is the first time dial-up networking is used on this computer, start with A.
If this computer already has dial-up networking set up, start with B.
To edit dial-up networking go to C.



A. Installing DUN and the Dial Up Modem:

  1. If prompted with a window explaining what Dial-Up Networking (DUN) is and how to install it, click INSTALL.
  2. If you do not have a modem installed, click YES to install, and follow the instructions in the Install New Modem window.
  3. In the Add RAS Device window, choose your modem and click OK.
  4. In the Remote Access Setup window, click Configure and select Dial-Out Only. Click OK.
  5. Click Network, and make sure only TCP/IP is checked and click OK, then Continue.
  6. Your computer may prompt you to Restart, do so now.
B. Setup Instructions:

  1. From your Windows NT desktop, go to MY COMPUTER and DIAL UP NETWORKING.

  2. a). A message appears saying...your phonebook is empty, simply click OK to add a new entry.
    b). If you have items in your phonebook, simply click NEW to add a new entry.
  3. In the New Phonebook Entry Wizard, enter the name of the connection (ie. Incentre), and click NEXT.
  4. Select "I am calling the Internet" and "Send my plain text password" options. Click NEXT.
  5. For the phone number, use the dial up modem line (ie. 421-4222 in Edmonton). Click NEXT, and FINISH.
C. Editing the Configurations:

  1. If you are not already in Dial Up Networking, go to MY COMPUTER and DIAL UP NETWORKING.
  2. In "Phonebook entry to dial", select Incentre, click More, and Edit Entry/Modem Properties.
  3. Under the Basic tab, in the Phone Number field, enter the dial up phone number. In the Dial Using field, make sure your modem is shown. You can set your modem preferences by selecting the Configure button.
  4. Under the Servers tab, as the Dial-Up Server Type, choose "PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet". Check TCP/IP, Enable Software Compression, and Enable PPP LCP Extensions.
  5. Choose the TCP/IP Settings button. Select the "Specify Name Server Addresses" option. As the Primary DNS, enter 198.161.96.1 and as the Secondary DNS, enter 198.161.96.5 . Leave Primary and Secondary WINS as 0.0.0.0 . Check both Use IP Header Compression and Use Default Gateway On Remote Network.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Under the Script tab, make sure None is selected. (Note: Do not select "Pop Up Terminal Window").
  8. Under the Security tab: Select "Accept Any Authentication Including Clear Text".
  9. Under the X.25 tab, make sure None is selected and all the fields are blank.
  10. Click OK.
