Windows 2000 Professional - Dial-Up Networking Connection Setup

These instructions will help you setup a dial-up connection to The Internet Centre. Setting up a connection other than what is described below will not be supported by The Internet Centre, and will be your responsibility should problems arise. Your hardware and software must be functioning properly in order for these instructions to assist you. Consult your Windows 2000 Help (go to Start > Help), or manuals for information not covered in this instruction set. Unless otherwise noted in these instructions, always leave the default values for all settings. Instructions for Dial-up to the Internet:

  1. Double-click on My Computer > Control Panel > Network and Dial-Up Connections > Make New Connection. (Make sure your Windows 2000 CD or disks are accessible).
    - OR -
    From desktop, right click on My Network Places icon > select Properties double-click on Make New Connection.
  2. Select "Dial-up to the Internet" > Next.
  3. Select "I want to set up my Internet connection manually..." > Next.
  4. Select "I connect through a phone line and modem" > Next.
  5. Select your modem from the drop-down list. Click Next.
  6. Enter the following information:
    • Area code: (ie. 780 or 403)
    • Telephone: (ie. 421-4222 or ISP dial-up number)
    • Country name and code: (ie. Canada (1))
    • Optional: Check or uncheck "use area code and dialing rules".
  7. Ignore the Advanced button (only for special situations only), and click Next.
  8. Enter your username and password > Next.
  9. Enter "Internet Centre" as the name for the dial up connection > Next.
  10. "Do you want to setup an Internet Mail account now", select Yes > Next.
  11. Select "Create new mail account" > Next.
  12. Enter "Display name" > Next.
  13. Enter the following:
    • Email address: (ie. johndoe@incentre.net)
    • Select "POP3" as "My incoming mail server".
    • Incoming mail server: pop.incentre.net
    • Outgoing mail server: smtp.incentre.net
    • Click Next.
  14. Enter the following:
    • Account name: (ie. johndoe)
    • Password: (ie. password)
    • Optional: remember password?
    • Click Next.
  15. Select or deselect "Connect to the Internet immediately...". Click Finish.



Instructions for Dial-up to Private Network:

Double-click on My Computer > Control Panel > Network and Dial-Up Connections > Make New Connection. (Make sure your Windows 2000 CD or disks are accessible).

Optional: If you do not have a modem installed, a message will appear such as: "There are no RAS compatible devices to add. Do you want RAS setup to invoke the modem installer to enable you to install a modem" Click Yes > Install Modem. Make sure that there is no checkmark next to "Don't Detect my modem, I will select it from a list", then click Next. (If your computer cannot find and install your modem you may choose to select it from a list). Once your modem is detected and installed, a Location Information screen will appear.

Enter any information that applies to you:
  • area code: (ie. 403 or 780 in Alberta)
  • number to dial to access an outside line: (ie. 9 or whatever is required)
  • call waiting deactivation code: (*70 if you have call waiting))

  • Click Next > Finished.


    Connecting to The Internet Centre:
    1. From Make New Connection > Next > choose Dial-up to private network > Next.
    2. Enter dial-up phone number (ie. 421-4222). Optional: "dialing rules" allows you to configure whether to use area code and country code. Click Next.
    3. Select type of connection "all users" or "for myself" and click Next.
    4. Enter a name for your connection (ie. The Internet Centre). Optional: select "add shortcut to desktop". Click Finish.
    5. In the Network and Dial-Up Connections window, right-click on the connection (ie. The Internet Centre), and choose Properties.
    6. Under the General tab > click Configure and select:
      • Select "enable hardware flow control"
      • Select "enable modem error control"
      • Select "enable modem compression"
      • Click OK
    7. Click Configure > Networking menu tab > highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > click Properties.
      • Select "Obtain an IP address automatically"
      • Select "Use the following DNS server addresses"
      • Enter preferred DNS server: 198.161.96.1
      • Enter alternate DNS server: 198.161.96.5
    8. Click the Advanced tab > DNS and:
      • Select "Append these DNS suffixes (in order):"
      • Remove checkmark for "Register this connection's address in DNS"
      • Click Add and enter: incentre.net
      • Click Add.
    9. Click Options > IP Security > select "Do not use IPSEC" > OK > OK > OK > OK.
    10. Optional: This option allows you to setup a main dial-up server for all client machines. Select the Sharing Tab > select "enable Internet Connection sharing for this connection" > click OK.

    If you have problems connecting with a dial-up session you have created or modified, you should delete The Internet Centre connection that isn't working and start over at the beginning starting with Connecting to The Internet Centre. Again, unless otherwise specified in these instructions, leave all settings as default.
