Oct 4, 2001 - Mail Server Outage - Sircam Virus

The return of the virus Sircam has been found to be responsible for the mail
server outage and Internet network instability on Wednesday, October 3, 2001.

Significant traffic on the mail server began building as early as the day before,
but eventually reached critical levels in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

As a reminder to all users, the presence of a serious virus on a computer can
cause significant problems, whether its on the client computer or on the Internet.
We strongly suggest all users update their anti-virus software on a frequent basis,
and to scan harddrives for possible viruses.

Some of the viruses of late has already proven to be able to take down entire
Internet networks and local area networks of all sorts. The importance of virus
prevention simply cannot be overstated.
