May 31, 2001 - Virus Hoax - SULFNBK.EXE Warning |
| An email named "SULFNBK.EXE Warning" has been
circulating throughout the Internet for the past week, causing more problems than a real virus. The virus is really just a hoax to create mass hysteria among unsuspecting email users. Originating from somewhere in Brazil, the email virus warning was translated from Portuguese to English. The email virus hoax calls for the deletion of a file named SULFNBK.EXE if found on a computer. A variation of the virus hoax adds the date June 1, 2001 as the day the virus will self execute. SULFNBK.EXE is a Microsoft Windows Utility that exists on many Windows PC computers, such as Windows ME, Windows 98, and Windows 95. Deleting the file only serves to prevent the recovery of long file names. The file is not crucial for running the operating system, but should be left alone. To prevent unnecessary problems, please DO NOT DELETE the file SULFNBK.EXE. Please ignore any messages regarding this hoax and do not pass on messages. Passing on messages about the hoax only serves to further propagate it. - Symantec AntiVirus Research Center For more information on this virus hoax or any viruses, please go to Norton Symantec's Antivirus Research Center or McAfee Anti-Virus. If you ever come upon an email virus alert, please do the research before informing everyone on your email address book, and later finding out it was really just a hoax. |
