What is Alberta SuperNet?The technical description can be best summed up by the Alberta Government: "Alberta SuperNet is a high-speed, high-capacity network linking approximately 4,200 provincial government facilities, schools, health care facilities and libraries in 429 Alberta communities. It's a pathway that lets government, educators and health caregivers share and deliver information and services province-wide, and faster than ever before. The high-speed bandwidth of SuperNet is also available in rural communities to Internet service providers (ISPs) as well as Application service providers (ASPs), who in turn may market high-speed services to business and residential users in SuperNet communities." What can SuperNet do for me?Individuals and businesses cannot directly connect to SuperNet as it is primarily designed for governmental organizations to communicate and share information. Also, by itself, being connected to SuperNet does not connect you to the Internet. In addition to connecting to SuperNet, you must also contract an Internet Service Provider, such as the Internet Centre, who is also connected to SuperNet to provide your internet connectivity. That being said, there are several ways in which regular Albertans can take advantage of SuperNet for the purpose of Internet Connectivity and video conferencing. How can rural Albertans get high speed access to the Internet? The Internet Centre has partnered with many small businesses in rural Alberta to help provide high speed Internet access. By gaining access to a Supernet POP (point of presence) site, local businesses can connect to SuperNet. Once connected, the Internet Centre can provide Internet connectivity, allowing the local provider to offer access to their community through a variety of methods. In many cases, this connectivity is provided via high speed wireless radios, allowing the access to be available in and around the community.
